“do i know you from somewhere?”

I love getting to know the soul of those I talk to. And recently I learned that “soul” can interchange with the word “heart.” I like to get to know the heart of those I associate with. I love connecting on a deep level.

On the way home from a flight to New York where I was visiting my brother a few years ago, I got a seat right in the middle of the row on the airplane. The first thing that I said to the man on the aisle seat as I was squeezing past him was, “I promise I wont need to go pee.” He laughed, and for the next 4 hours we chatted. I got to know his heart! His soul. Toward the end of the flight he mentioned that he feels like he had known me forever. The feelings were mutual. 

How did this happen?

I believe that when I am my true authentic self, it gives others the opportunity to be themselves. And vice versa. In this case, I think that he showed up authentically as well. Sometimes I talk to people and it takes them a minute to see they can trust me, but others will never open up. I also believe it takes a lot of self awareness to notice if you are being honest and real. You might want to be or think you are, but only the connection will really tell if you are!

I was able to learn about his family and his childhood and his parents and his career. I also was able to learn what made him sad or frustrated and happy. We had a lot in common. 

It seems it’s easier to open up to strangers. You may never see them again, and they don’t know you. That makes it easy to spill your heart to them. But you leave each other connected on a level that is hard to explain. 

I think it’s a spiritual experience to connect on this level.

I am grateful for the few people that I have had this exchange with. I’ll never forget them! (I say few because though I love conversing with EVERYONE I see, only a select few will be REAL and AUTHENTIC)

Here are 5 things that need to happen for this encounter to happen in my observation:

1. You and the person you are talking to both have to have a chance to share your heart. It’s not a one way street.

2. You are honest in everything you say.

3. You are holding nothing back.

4. You are asking questions to get to know more.

5. You allow any emotions you are feeling, to surface.

   
   

When you start to feel like you have known this person forever, then you know, that you have experienced another level in the human soul and the potential to human relationships.
